Join Sue for a colourful, creative watercolour workshop painting a rhino or elephant in her distinctive semi-realistic style. Suitable for all abilities, the day will include plenty of expressive wet washes, playing with colour harmony and playful drawing. You can work from Sue’s rhino reference photo or bring your own image and enjoy the freedom to exaggerate, adapt and bring real personality to your animal. Sue will lead the creative process.
Refreshments of tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring you own mug and lunch.
Materials required:
If you choose not to use my reference image, please come prepared with your own. Plan your composition (e.g., whether you will paint the whole animal and how you will handle the background). I will be cropping the reference to paint the rhino up close for dramatic effect.
We will discuss colour choices in the opening stages of the workshop. I will be using a limited colour palette.
Please draw your rhino or elephant onto a sheet of drawing paper that is the same size as your watercolor paper. Ensure your drawing is correct before transferring it. I usually use graphite tracedown for this.
Please arrive with the image already drawn onto your drawing paper, but not yet transferred onto your watercolor paper. We will discuss making changes to personalise your image, and having the basic drawing completed beforehand will save time.
Paint Colours:
- Bring your choice of colours, which we will discuss on the day.
- Please bring transparent colours if possible.
- You may use any colours, you will need to produce a colour chart.
Brushes:
- A selection of round brushes with a good point and good water-holding capacity.
- A selection of square brushes of different sizes. I will be doing the bulk of the painting with square brushes (I prefer Rosemary & Co series 768).
Paper:
- Recommended: 425g Saunders Waterford (Not - High White).
- Size: ¼ imperial sheet (27cm x 38cm) plus a board.
You are welcome to use a larger size if you prefer.
- Scraps of the same watercolor paper to practice on.
Other Items:
- A white tile or flat ceramic surface for a dry palette
- Light grey fineliner pen (optional, to trace for a clean image)
- Automatic drafting/propelling pencil (0.7mm, 2B lead)
- Red ballpoint pen (for tracing)
- Graphite tracedown
- Derwent Soft Art Eraser (black)
- Painting palette for watercolour paints
- Two water containers
- Paper towels
- Small spray bottle for clean water
- Table salt
- Masking fluid
- Hair dryer (if you have a spare)
- Pipette
- Scissors
- Notebook and pen
- Skewer or cocktail stick
- Masking tape
