This is the Society’s Art Appreciation fixture. We invite you to attend these sessions to explore and discuss the significant impact and importance of art. If you are interested in joining us, please check the Calendar section for details on all upcoming presentations.

This well-established event is designed to engage both art historians and general members by providing comprehensive insights into the lives, artistic journeys, and notable works of various artists.

Through a scholarly lens, we will analyse each artist's evolution, style, technique, colour palette, and composition. The sessions will examine the social and political contexts that influenced their creativity, allowing for a collective appreciation of the aesthetic and historical value of these works. Each meeting will consist of a PowerPoint presentation and talk, providing you with a deeper understanding of both recognised masterpieces as well as underrepresented voices in the art world.

To provide an immersive experience, we have structured these sessions to include:

Biographical Deep Dives: Exploring the personal histories and formative experiences that shaped each artist.

Technical Analysis: Breaking down specific methods, from the use of light and shadow to the physical application of materials.

Thematic Comparisons: Contrasting works from different periods or movements to highlight shifts in cultural narratives.
 

Looking at Pictures

This is a small group that meets weekly on Zoom on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. During the meeting, each person presents for 15 to 20 minutes on a selection of pictures based on an agreed topic. Afterward, we review the presentation together, and all members participate in a discussion about the artwork.

The meetings last for about an hour and offer a fascinating way to learn more about artists and their work.
